Library catalogs are shaped over many years, and not every record contains the same level of detail. Patrons need enough information to decide whether a resource is relevant, regardless of the cataloging history behind the record. Missing summaries or audience data can make that decision harder and leave useful material outside filtered results.
The November release of Vega Discover addresses both sides of that problem.
Filling in context when summaries are missing
For libraries using the Syndetics Unbound integration, Vega Discover now checks Syndetics when the edition shown in the full title view has no MARC 520 $a summary. When a Syndetics summary is available, it appears in the record. Existing MARC 520 summaries remain the preferred source whenever they are present.
That fallback gives patrons more context when considering a title, particularly in older or less detailed areas of the collection. It also reduces the need for library staff to add missing summaries one record at a time.
Bringing relevant titles into filtered results
Filtering presents a related challenge. Many libraries do not populate the MARC 008/22 target-audience field for adult collections. When that value is blank, relevant adult titles may not appear when a patron uses the Age facet to narrow their results.
Library administrators can now decide how those blank values should be treated within the Age facet. Following a full MARC extraction, affected titles can appear under the selected age category without staff having to update every record or introduce a new cataloging workflow for incoming material.
Neither change replaces local cataloging decisions. Together, they give libraries practical ways to work with the metadata already in their catalogs, even when that metadata is uneven. Patrons receive fuller title information and more complete results when filtering, while staff can improve discovery without taking on a large retrospective cataloging project.
