Library service rarely happens behind a desk. Staff answer questions in the stacks, help patrons locate materials, provide directions, troubleshoot account issues, and assist visitors throughout the building. Earlier this year, we’ve announced that Vega Mobile Worklists became available for all Sierra libraries. This app extends key library workflows to a mobile device, and with real-time access to holds processing, inventory, and item editing – staff can work more efficiently while reducing unnecessary trips back to a workstation.
This flexibility is especially valuable for reference logging. Rather than using paper tally sheets or recording interactions later, staff can capture patron assistance in the moment. Vega Mobile Worklists supports four standard reference categories aligned with IMLS definitions: information referrals, drop-in reference instruction, help using information resources, and directional questions. With a single tap, staff can record interactions while staying focused on patrons, giving libraries a more accurate view of daily service activity.
The app also simplifies reporting. Reference logs can be exported by staff member, date, or date range, removing the need for manual counts and spreadsheet tracking. Libraries gain clearer insight into service trends while reducing administrative work for patron-facing staff.

Vega Mobile Worklists also puts Vega Discover search directly on staff devices. Library staff can search the catalog without returning to a service desk, making it easier to answer patron questions in the stacks, at outreach events, or anywhere else service happens.
Search results include title details, editions, locations, availability, call numbers, item information, and MARC records. Staff can quickly confirm where a title is shelved, whether it is available, which barcode applies, and which bibliographic details are needed to help a patron. They can also share results by email when follow-up service is needed.

Together, these capabilities help libraries extend services beyond traditional service points. Staff have immediate access to catalog information and an efficient way to capture reference interactions, all from a device they carry with them throughout the day. This is how your library gets faster patron assistance, more accurate reporting, and greater flexibility to deliver library services wherever they happen.
Sierra libraries with a Vega Mobile Worklists subscription can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Once installed, staff can sign in with their existing credentials and begin working immediately.
