Polaris October 2026: What’s new for everyday library work

The Polaris October 2026 release (8.2) brings more than 30 community-driven updates across cataloging, holds, serials, acquisitions, administration, APIs and other areas of Polaris.

At the heart of this release are practical changes to the work library staff manage every day. From creating multiple items at once and managing labels, to giving consortia more control over holds and serials, the focus is on making common tasks easier and giving libraries more flexibility in how they manage their operations.

The release also continues the broader direction for Polaris: bringing more of the work staff need into one connected library platform, while continuing to build on the trusted workflows libraries already rely on. And with more than 30 updates driven by the community, it reflects something that has always been important to Polaris: listening to libraries and continuing to develop the platform around how they work.

Create multiple items at once

Staff can now create multiple items at the same time using different templates. This makes it easier to add new materials to the collection, particularly when working with larger batches that require different item settings.

More control over holds across a consortium

Every consortium works a little differently. A new configuration option gives libraries more control over holds placed by non-resident patrons, or other library-defined patron groups.
Libraries can limit these requests to items owned by the patron’s registered library, helping consortia manage when materials should, and should not, move between member libraries.

Make label changes directly in Polaris

Cataloging staff can now manage spine-label configurations directly in Polaris, keeping more of the work involved in preparing and maintaining collections together in one place.

Easier serials processing for consortia

For consortia that receive serial issues centrally, staff can now check in multiple issues at once through the Find Tool, making it easier to manage this work across a shared collection.

More in the October release

The release also adds new Find Tool search options and display columns, new links between acquisitions workforms, PAPI updates and additional bulk-change options.
It also marks another step in bringing system administration into Polaris, with the legacy Web Admin interface being retired as part of this release.

Built around everyday library work

Together, these changes support a simpler, more flexible approach to everyday library work. Their value lies not just in individual improvements, but in how they fit into the working day: fewer steps between tasks and more room for libraries to work in ways that suit their needs. The aim is to keep routine processes from getting in the way of what matters most – supporting staff and serving their communities.
